The Archetypes and How to Use them in Writing

All of my novels have archetypes in them, and each character always impacts another, because everything and everyone is connected, even if you can’t see it yet. (This is the hill I will die on, so don’t @ me.)

So how does this impact your writing? Well, you need to understand what archetypes are.

According to Carl Jung, Archetypes are universal patterns of behaviour, thoughts, and emotions that exist in our unconscious minds. They are like blueprints or templates that shape how we respond to various situations and experiences in life. They are characters in a play that we all have inside us that have a specific way of being or a role to play. For example, there's the Hero, the Wise Old Man, the Trickster, and the Mother. We all have these characters within us, but some may be more prominent than others.

I always find it interesting when you enter a party, or start a new job or be in a space with new people and you begin to see people playing their roles. There is always the same archetype, different name or age that you have seen since school and each of them is a part of your story if you want them to be.

I think it is important to understand these roles in your writing. The journey of the characters and how they interrelate helps you evolve your characters and their lessons learned. I believe good characters should be changed at the end of their story, as we should as humans. We can’t experience something challenging and not have learnt something about ourselves or the world afterwards.

There are some basic archetypes, see below:

Within each of these are even more, such as the seven types of female archetypes and seven types of outlaws and rebels and more but this is enough for now to understand who and how they relate to each other.

Including Archetypes into Your Story

I have created an easy-to-understand Archetype guide and worksheets for writers because there is a lot of information out there but not much about how to turn them into something tangible in your books.

These worksheets are super helpful and include:

  1. Images and breakdowns of the archetypes and examples of them in books, films and TV

  2. Worksheets on Identifying the Archetypes in your story

  3. Worksheets to develop these further in your stories to create compelling characters

  4. Worksheets on how to integrate them into your story.
